Table Talk: Sports Style

As the kids get older and their busy schedules get busier, it becomes increasingly difficult to find time for family dinners. While we strive for at least three nights per week, we have a MANDATORY Sunday night family dinner and Table Talk is always a crowd pleaser. It is amazing what you learn about your kids when you ask fun questions and not directed questions. By directed I mean: “Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend?” “Did you have a good day at school?” “Do any of your friends drink or smoke pot?” “Have you ever sexted or received a sext?” They will plead the 5th faster than a politician under oath.

I am 17 years into parenting and my teenagers talk with me. Often and about all topics. The reason they do is because I have been talking, asking and listening to them for years. Talk with your kids, do it often, you will reap the rewards when it matters most.

Enjoy your family time. The days might be long, but the years go by fast.

1. What is the first thing you think of when you hear the term “professional athlete”?

2. Should we look up to professional athletes? Should they be role models for kids? Why or why not?

3. Do you think football is an unsafe sport? Should it be banned in schools?

4. Do you think athletes in schools should get special privileges? Do they?

5. Do you think college athletes should be paid? Is a scholarship enough?

6. Would you rather be the coach of a professional team or a player on the team? Why?

7. Who is your favorite athlete right now?

8. Should girls be allowed to play on boys sports teams if they are good enough to make the team? Why or why not?

9. What is at least one lesson playing a sport has taught you?

10. What is your favorite sport to watch on television? Live?

Afterwards, come on over to the Ooph Facebook page and tell us some of your kids’ answers.
